In 1990, Shawn Dow was failing school with a 1.6 GPA and considered dropping out. Without career guidance and surrounded by friends who kept him out late, with a single mother working two jobs to keep a roof over their heads, he hadn’t yet discovered his drive. It wasn’t until he learned about a program for wayward kids like himself at William M. Davies, Jr. Career and Technical High School that he, with the help of inspirational teachers and through the learning of a trade, that he discovered his drive and then his dream.
“Being a machinist, you MAY never be rich, but you’ll never starve!”
-Mr. Crowley, William M. Davies, Jr. Career & Technical High School Teacher
Inspired, Shawn graduated from Cumberland High School. He became a machinist with the knowledge he had gleaned and through his renewed passion. When Shawn started a family, it was his daughters that inspired him to work even harder to provide not just for himself, but for their future. While working full time, he began doing what he loved at night - building motorcycles and fabricating parts for friends and family until his tiny garage and basement was so packed with them, they became difficult to work on.
It wasn’t until he came in to work exhausted one day and a coworker asked him if he’d been out partying all weekend that things changed for him. Shawn showed his coworker the photos of his passion projects - the packed garage with all of the work he’d rather be doing. “Why are you still here?” his friend asked. And just like that - he quit.
Bad Mouth Bikes became an LLC. in 2019 and in the midst of the pandemic and uncertain times, hired their first employee and Manager, Samantha Alice. Together, they have turned Shawn’s dreams into something tangible, something beautiful, something you can often hear all the way down Post Road.
They started building bikes locally and then nationally. BMB went from a tiny garage to a shop to a much bigger shop and they just keep growing. Currently with 8 employees, Bad Mouth Bikes has become national news.
Laconia’s 100th Anniversary Biker Build-Off handed the first-place trophy to Shawn and his committed crew at BMB in 2023 and in 2024, Orange County Choppers awarded them even more honors at their Invitational-Only Bike Show. Meeting some of the men on American Choppers who had inspired Shawn at a young age to build bikes was a dream come true. And he’s not done chasing them!
“Everybody has a dream. Everybody has something they are inspired to be and want to do in life and mine is building custom motorcycles - mine is building people’s dreams.”
-Shawn Down
